Exactly one year ago today, Crystal Palace appointed Oliver Glasner as their manager.
The 49-year-old Oliver Glasner arrived in South London with an impressive resume—he was a club legend and captain during his playing days in Austria, and as a manager, he led VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt to success, including a UEFA Europa League win in 2021/22.
During his first press conference, Glasner humbly remarked, “I’m no magician – I’m not David Copperfield!” Yet his Palace side has conjured up plenty of memorable moments since. His tenure kicked off with a 3-0 win over Burnley at Selhurst Park, where Chris Richards, Jordan Ayew, and Jean-Philippe Mateta scored to give him a perfect start.
However, the honeymoon phase was short-lived as Palace went winless in their next five Premier League games, losing three. Things turned around with a stunning 1-0 victory over title-contenders Liverpool at Anfield, courtesy of Ebere Eze’s Goal of the Season. That victory launched a run of six wins in seven games, including a 5-0 thrashing of Aston Villa on the season’s final day. This late surge helped Palace secure only their second-ever top-half Premier League finish, with their highest-ever goal tally (57) and joint-best points tally (49).
This season started with an eight-match winless streak, but a turning point came with a victory over Tottenham in late October. Palace have since won six and drawn six of their next 16 league games. They also reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2011/12 and the FA Cup fifth round, where they will face Millwall at Selhurst Park.
After 44 matches, Glasner’s record stands at 19 wins, 12 draws, and 13 defeats, giving him a 43.1% win rate—the highest of any Palace manager who has led the team exclusively in the top flight. Under Glasner, Palace has scored 71 goals (an average of 1.6 per game) and conceded 51.
Jean-Philippe Mateta leads the team in scoring under Glasner, with 27 goals in 43 appearances—24 of those in the Premier League, ranking him just two goals behind Mohamed Salah during the same timeframe. Ebere Eze has also been crucial, netting 11 times in 37 appearances. Meanwhile, Dean Henderson has been instrumental at the back, helping Palace keep 15 clean sheets, averaging one every three games.
Happy one-year anniversary in South London, Oliver Glasner!
