iNews reports that Newcastle United are among the Premier League clubs eyeing AFC Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen for a summer transfer.
Newcastle are expected to have an active summer transfer window after missing out on reinforcements for both their attack and defense in January.
The club sold Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United for £9m and ended Lloyd Kelly’s brief Tyneside stay with a loan move to Juventus, which includes a £20m purchase obligation this summer.
Fans may feel frustrated by the lack of squad depth for the rest of the season, but sporting director Paul Mitchell now has a healthy budget to bring in impactful players for next season. Strengthening their attack will be key, with a high-quality right winger needed to complement Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
Defensive depth is another pressing concern. With Fabian Schar and Dan Burn nearing the twilight of their careers, Newcastle needs quality backups to stay competitive across all competitions. Finding a long-term partner for Sven Botman has also proven difficult, especially after their attempts to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace were rebuffed last summer.
Now, Newcastle seems to have shifted their attention to another Premier League talent—AFC Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen. According to *iNews*, Newcastle is among several clubs interested in the 19-year-old, alongside Liverpool and Chelsea. Bournemouth is reportedly demanding a £50m fee for their rising star.
Should Newcastle sign Huijsen?
Newcastle needs a successor for Schar, particularly if they secure European qualification this season. Dubbed “one of the most talented teenage CBs in Europe” and the “complete package” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Huijsen has attracted attention from top clubs.
The Spanish U21 defender ranks in the top 5% of European center-backs for shot-creating actions and interceptions per 90 minutes. He’s also in the top 16% for progressive carries, clearances, and blocks per game—impressive stats for a teenager.
Huijsen also offers Premier League experience, having risen to Bournemouth’s first team after joining from Juventus last summer.
With Liverpool and Chelsea also interested, Newcastle will face stiff competition. However, the Tyneside project has proven successful for young players like Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon under Eddie Howe’s guidance.
Investing in Huijsen would be a smart long-term move for Newcastle, with the potential to pay huge dividends in the coming years.
