Premier League matchday 25 has wrapped up, and it was another tough day for Southampton. Their former star impressed, but they suffered a home defeat to Bournemouth.
As the Premier League enters its critical stages, Southampton’s struggles continue. After a humiliating 1-3 loss to Bournemouth at home, it feels like the only thing changing for the Saints is the opposition—nothing else improves.
Despite the ongoing defeats, Southampton somehow manages to disappoint its fans further. This time, it’s former player Charly Alcaraz who shines, but not for Southampton.
The Argentine midfielder, who recently returned to the Premier League with Everton, delivered a standout performance on his first start for the Toffees. In Everton’s 1-0 win against Crystal Palace, Alcaraz played a key role, first setting up Beto’s go-ahead goal, then finishing with a match-winning strike. His performance at Selhurst Park made him Everton’s best player.
Even die-hard Southampton fans have to admit, Alcaraz’s display was impressive. Wouldn’t it have been great if he were still with Southampton? Especially when the team’s attacking play seemed to revolve solely around Kamaldeen Sulemana.
With his creative flair in midfield, Alcaraz could have been a game-changer for the Saints. Instead, Southampton fans are left to dream.
For now, Mateus Fernandes is the closest thing Southampton has to Alcaraz, stepping up in key moments this season. Hopefully, he could be the club’s new creative force in the future.
