Newcastle United have made signing a right winger their top priority for the upcoming summer transfer window, according to Football Insider.
In the latest Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke confirmed that strengthening this position is a “top priority” for manager Eddie Howe. Although Jacob Murphy is currently the first-choice right winger, Howe has long sought to add more quality to this role.
During the January transfer window, Howe hoped to sign both a right winger and a center-back. However, the club made no first-team signings at the time, opting instead for long-term planning over short-term decisions. Newcastle are now expected to spend big this summer.
Howe aims to boost the club’s attacking options in the final third to stay competitive in the race for European football. The club’s primary target is reportedly PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko.
Bakayoko, whose contract runs until 2026, could be sold by PSV to avoid losing him for free. A fee of £35-40 million is expected, which is well within Newcastle’s price range. The 21-year-old Belgium international has scored 31 goals and provided 22 assists in 116 appearances for PSV.
Newcastle were restricted by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules last season, forcing them to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh early in the window. However, those constraints are no longer expected to be an issue this summer.
The sales of Lloyd Kelly and Miguel Almiron have strengthened Newcastle’s financial position ahead of their summer spending spree.
