Even if defender Craig Dawson cancels his Wolves contract and becomes a free agent, Leicester City will not be able to sign him. The veteran center-back was linked to a deadline-day move to the King Power Stadium but has since been left out of Wolves’ Premier League squad for the rest of the season.
After using just 24 spaces in their allowed 25-man Premier League squad for the second half of the season, City has room to add an unattached player. However, the seasoned center-back will not be going to the King Power Stadium despite deadline-day negotiations regarding a trade involving Dawson and Conor Coady.
That is even if he decides to leave Wolves. Although the team only filled 22 spots and had room to sign three more homegrown players, Dawson was left out of Vitor Pereira’s 25-man roster, sparking continued talks about his contract being cancelled.
Dawson has dropped significantly in the hierarchy since acquiring center-backs Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Agbadou during the January transfer window. Pereira has informed him about this.
“I informed the club beforehand that I would not have room for Craig in the squad if we added another center-back,” Pereira stated. “I have been talking to the club about this for a while now.”I spoke with the athlete, and I have a great deal of respect for him and his career. However, his profile is not the one I want to use to assemble the squad.
But City wouldn’t be able to sign him if his contract was canceled. Only free agents who were not under contract before the January transfer window ended are eligible to be signed by City.
Dawson would still be able to relocate to a rural area with an open winter window. This is the situation in a few European nations, but it also applies to the United States. MLS clubs have until the middle of April to be ready for the 2025 campaign.
