Ipswich Town’s Cameron Burgess wants more Premier League minutes but acknowledges that squad competition is key to their survival battle.
Ipswich Town boast strong depth across the pitch, particularly at centre-back, where Cameron Burgess is one of four natural options battling for two starting spots.
Manager Kieran McKenna rarely includes a dedicated centre-back on the bench, with Axel Tuanzebe and Ben Godfrey also capable of filling in. As a result, Burgess has featured in just 10 Premier League matches, mainly covering for Jacob Greaves during his hamstring injury. Despite limited minutes, he remains focused on proving himself.
“Everyone wants to play—it’s what we’re here for,” Burgess said. “If you could finish the season having played every game in the Premier League, you’d be delighted. But that’s not always possible. With the squad we have, competition is inevitable. You have to be ready when your chance comes.”
Burgess emphasized the importance of squad depth, crediting it as a key factor in Ipswich’s Premier League survival push. “Many of us have been in this situation over the last couple of years. It’s a squad game for us, and that’s where our strength lies.”
Ultimately, selection is out of his hands. “It’s the manager’s decision, and competition makes those calls tougher. I’m just glad it’s not my choice to make! My goal is to play as much as possible, prove I belong at this level, and help the team win games to secure our place in the league.”
