Newcastle Eyeing Controversial £25m Swoop for Sunderland Midfielder

Newcastle United plan to lure a Sunderland player in a bold summer move.

Just over a year has passed since the last Tyne-Wear derby, where Newcastle United secured a 3-0 victory over Sunderland in the FA Cup, thanks to Alexander Isak’s brace and an own goal from Daniel Ballard.

The two North East rivals have been on contrasting journeys. Sunderland are pushing for a Premier League return while sitting fourth in the Championship, whereas Newcastle are aiming for another Champions League spot.

After a quiet January transfer window, Newcastle are expected to spend big this summer. With Sean Longstaff’s future uncertain, a new central midfielder is a key target—one that could come at Sunderland’s expense.

Newcastle Target Sunderland’s Chris Rigg
Newcastle’s interest in Chris Rigg isn’t new. The teenage sensation first caught their eye in 2023 when he burst onto the scene at Sunderland.

Rigg’s family reportedly supports Newcastle, and the Magpies have been monitoring his progress closely. Scouts were regularly sent to watch him last year, and now, a summer battle for his signature is brewing.

According to *CaughtOffside*, Newcastle are among several clubs keen on signing Rigg, alongside Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United. Chelsea, Manchester City, Brighton, and even Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the 17-year-old.

Sunderland value Rigg at £25m, a figure Newcastle can comfortably afford.

Players Who Represented Both Clubs
Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, 19 players have featured for both Newcastle and Sunderland.

Adam Armstrong nearly joined Sunderland last summer before opting for West Brom, while notable names like Jack Colback, Lee Clark, and Titus Bramble have played for both clubs.

Newcastle legend Andy Cole also had a brief stint with Sunderland toward the end of his career.

If Rigg makes the controversial switch this summer, he will add his name to this historic list.
