Leeds United suffer Premier League promotion setback after Burnley clash

Leeds United have suffered a blow in their aspirations of securing promotion to the Premier League when Burnley picked up an important three points against Oxford United.

After three goalless draws in four meetings, the Clarets were in desperate need of a victory to maintain in touch with the top two of Leeds and Sheffield United. Unsurprisingly, Burnley opened the encounter on the front foot but were frustrating their home supporters by failing to score on their chances.

However, shortly after the half hour mark, Scott Parker’s team hit the front. A enticing delivery by Josh Cullen was mistakenly deflected into his own net by defender Michal Helik to open the score.
The second half followed a familiar trend for Burnley as they attempted to create a cushion but could not do so. On this occasion, it would not come back to bite them as the three points were secured.
Parker’s players were in action on Tuesday night due to their participation in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday when they make the long trip down to Southampton. The Whites are also in cup action this weekend against Millwall but shall first return to Championship action on Wednesday evening when they face Coventry City.

Speaking about the strain of getting promoted this season, Daniel Farke addressed reporters in his pre-match press conference: “This is the expectation. What I want is to make sure it belongs. “I haven’t signed a deal to stay in this league in the next four years. Just because we have the best fans in the country and tradition… together in the last 20 years we were not able to celebrate promotion in front of supporters.

“We got quite close last season but right now we have a terrific chance. If we keep going in this style we have a decent chance.”
