“Stay updated with the latest Newcastle United transfer news and rumors as St James’ Park buzzes with potential new signings.”
Newcastle United experienced a quiet January transfer window, but their business might not be entirely over. Despite being linked with several players, the Magpies did not make any new signings. However, they did see some departures, with Miguel Almiron sealing a permanent move to Atlanta in Major League Soccer, and Lloyd Kelly reportedly nearing a switch to Juventus.
Although the Premier League transfer deadline has passed, Newcastle still has the option to sign free agents, provided those players haven’t featured for another club since the window closed. This opens up potential opportunities for the Magpies to strengthen their squad in the coming weeks.
One area that could benefit from reinforcements is centre-back, especially after their failed pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi last summer. Free agents like Jason Denayer, formerly of Manchester City and Lyon, and Daniel Amartey, an ex-Leicester City defender, are available. Denayer recently left Saudi Pro League side Al Fateh, while Amartey has been without a club since departing Besiktas in September.
If Newcastle turns its attention to bolstering the attack, there are also notable free-agent forwards on the market. Former Liverpool winger Ryan Kent is available after mutually terminating his contract with Fenerbahce in October. Additionally, Wissam Ben Yedder, the prolific French striker who left Monaco last year, remains unattached despite scoring 20 goals in 34 appearances last season.
Newcastle’s lack of activity in January was expected, as manager Eddie Howe had previously indicated the club was unlikely to recruit this window. He emphasized the importance of getting injured players like Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes back to full fitness, expressing confidence in the squad’s current strength. Howe also stated that he anticipates no further outgoings, barring unexpected developments.
The Magpies return to action on Wednesday in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal, holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg.
