Mark Robins wraps up his first Stoke City transfer window with fresh signings and familiar returns.
Ryan Mmaee Returns Early to Stoke in Surprise Transfer Twist
Ryan Mmaee is making an unexpected early return to Stoke City, adding a twist to what had been a quiet transfer deadline. The 27-year-old striker, loaned to Rapid Vienna, has struggled with injuries, first suffering a quad problem in August and then a hamstring setback last week. Now facing another four to six weeks on the sidelines, his time at Rapid has been cut short.
Rapid, already dealing with striker woes—including Guido Burgstaller’s shocking skull fracture in December—had hoped Mmaee would fill the void. However, with his latest injury, they turned to Stoke to negotiate an early return. The agreement required all three parties’ consent, with Rapid continuing to cover most of his wages. Just days ago, it seemed Mmaee’s Stoke career was over, but now he has a fresh chance to prove himself in the Championship.
For new Stoke manager Mark Robins, this provides an opportunity to assess a player under contract until 2026. Stoke’s attacking lineup has already undergone major changes, with Tom Cannon departing, Ali Al-Hamadi arriving, and Niall Ennis loaned to Blackpool. Nathan Lowe was recalled, while Emre Tezgel and Lewis Koumas are also in the mix. Sam Gallagher, meanwhile, is recovering from a hamstring injury.
Mmaee becomes the third player to return early from loan in recent weeks, following Lewis Baker’s recall from Blackburn. Stoke also rejected a late bid from FC Midtjylland for Wouter Burger, as they lacked time to find a replacement. Midfielder Jordan Thompson, linked with AIK Stockholm, is focused on regaining fitness after surgery.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Darius Lipsiuc has joined Walsall on loan, following in the footsteps of Nathan Lowe and goalkeeper Tommy Simkin. Excited for the move, Lipsiuc stated, “It’s been a long time coming, so I’m buzzing and ready to go.”
Stoke’s January dealings have been restricted by Financial Fair Play, following last summer’s heavy spending under Alex Neil. However, they secured Al-Hamadi in a competitive race and added Manchester City’s Josh Wilson-Esbrand on loan. With key players set to return from injury soon, Robins is shaping his squad for the challenges ahead.
