Alex Palmer’s Deadline Day Move to Ipswich Town

As Alex Palmer stepped onto the pitch for West Brom’s 2-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, he may not have known Ipswich Town were preparing a late move for him. The deal came together quickly, with rumors surfacing in the morning and confirmation arriving just before 9 PM—less than two hours before the transfer window closed.

“It’s been hectic, but that’s football,” Palmer told Town TV. “I’m excited to embrace a new challenge.”

The 28-year-old had previously turned down a Premier League move to Luton Town in 2023, but when Ipswich came calling, the opportunity was too good to refuse. Despite leaving West Brom with a heavy heart, he felt it was the right time to take a new path.

“When you spend so much time at a club, it’s always a tough decision,” he admitted. “But I’m ready for something new.”

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna played a key role in persuading Palmer, who was also drawn to the club’s ambition and upward trajectory. Familiar faces in the dressing room made the transition even smoother.

“You see a club that’s going places,” Palmer said. “Everything I’ve heard about the manager has been positive. I know a few of the lads, which helps.”

Palmer had taken note of Ipswich’s rise, recalling the thrilling 2-2 draw at Portman Road last season. “The atmosphere was incredible, a proper game of football,” he said. “Now, this will be my home for the foreseeable future.”

With Ipswich facing uncertainty in goal due to injuries and inconsistency, Palmer has a strong chance to claim the No.1 spot. “I’d like to say I’m solid, vocal, and command my box,” he described. “I’m fit and raring to go.”

Having shared the Championship Golden Glove with Leeds’ Illan Meslier last season, Palmer arrives with a strong track record. His goal now is clear: “I’ve come here with one aim—to help keep Ipswich in the Premier League.”

After spending nearly his entire career at West Brom since joining their academy in 2010, Palmer is ready for the next chapter. The second half of the season will be his first taste of top-flight football, and he’s determined to make an impact.
