Newcastle United have rejected a bid for left-back Matt Targett as the winter transfer window nears its end.
Newcastle United have rejected a loan approach from Championship side Watford for left-back Matt Targett, according to Sky Sports. The 29-year-old initially joined Newcastle on loan from Aston Villa before making the move permanent for £15 million in 2022. However, injuries, illness, and strong competition have limited his impact.
Targett made his first start in over 14 months in January, assisting twice in Newcastle’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Bromley. Despite that, he has not featured in a Premier League matchday squad since and has played just once in the league this season—a brief substitute appearance against Aston Villa on Boxing Day. Initially, Newcastle were open to offers for Targett as he entered the final 18 months of his contract, but that stance has now changed.
Newcastle Unlikely to Approve Targett’s Exit After £20m Deal
The decision to keep Targett is influenced by Lloyd Kelly’s imminent move to Juventus, which includes a £20 million obligation to buy. With both Kelly and Targett capable of playing left-back, Newcastle are reluctant to lose depth in that position without securing a replacement before the transfer window closes.
Lewis Hall is currently the club’s first-choice left-back, but Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, and Tino Livramento have also played in the role. Among them, Targett remains the most natural and experienced left-back in the squad.
Leeds United Links Dismissed
Leeds United were also linked with a move for Targett, but the club quickly dismissed the speculation as “complete fabrication.” Despite reports suggesting discussions had taken place, Leeds made it clear that no agreement was in place.
When asked about potential departures earlier this month, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was noncommittal, citing the squad’s already thin numbers. However, since then, the club has allowed both Miguel Almirón and Lloyd Kelly to leave, raising questions about whether Targett could still be on the move.
Targett Opens Up on Challenging Period
Targett has endured a difficult spell at Newcastle, with a hamstring injury followed by Achilles and eczema issues keeping him out of action for over a year.
“It has been very difficult, I’m not going to lie,” he admitted. “But coming on against Aston Villa [on Boxing Day] gave me that feeling back—it reminded me how much I missed playing. Starting against Bromley and playing a significant part of the game was a great moment for me.”
While his future remains uncertain, Targett appears determined to fight for his place at Newcastle.
