Jordan Henderson, an icon of Wearside, and Chuba Akpom, a target for Sunderland, are currently at Dutch powerhouse Ajax. They might now be on the verge of signing another Sunderland target.
Beginning with Sunderland’s connections to Jordan Henderson in 2024, Ajax has been in the news a lot lately.
The former Black Cats academy player was rumored to be leaving Ajax, and Sunderland was eager for a spectacular reunion, but that connection has since been broken.
More lately, Chuba Akpom of Ajax has been connected to Sunderland. According to reports, Sunderland is interested in signing the former Middlesbrough star, and the Eredivisie team is eager to get Akpom off their payroll.
Wearsiders may even recognize the name of Ajax manager Francesco Farioli, who was associated with the manager’s position during Tony Mowbray’s tenure.
Another allegation between Sunderland and Ajax is that both teams are trying to capture the same player before the transfer window closes on February 3.
Ajax is interested in Rabbi Matondo, a Sunderland target.
Before the deadline, Rabbi Matondo is expected to depart Rangers, and Sunderland has been linked to the former Manchester City player. According to Sunderland AFC News, Matondo may be able to leave Rangers for a low cost because the Gers are only eager to get him off their books.
Ajax has shown interest in Matondo, 24, according to a new report from the Dutch publication De Telegraaf. As they try to recruit a new winger in the last few days of the transfer window, they claim that Matondo has “particularly charmed” Ajax’s scouts.
For Ajax, the past two seasons have been unstable. Despite being four points behind PSV in the Eredivisie standings, the team is really stabilizing under Farioli and has a game left.
Rangers are negotiating the transfer of Rabbi Matondo.
It was recently disclosed that many Championship clubs were interested in signing the Welsh international, and Rangers are in negotiations to sell Matondo before February 3rd.
However, Sunderland and any other Championship team interested in acquiring the left-sided attacker may suffer a terrible blow now that Ajax is in the running.
In European football, Ajax is still a major club. And since Ajax is still in the Europa League, Matondo would have the opportunity to play for the team in European football in addition to competing for an Eredivisie championship.
Therefore, Sunderland will undoubtedly be concerned about Ajax entering the Matondo race.
