The former Middlesbrough and Arsenal striker is reportedly being ‘pushed’ by Sunderland to sign him for £12 million.

Chuba Akpom has been linked to a move to Sunderland.
According to sources, Sunderland is “pushing” to recruit Chuba Akpom, a former striker for Middlesbrough.

This January transfer window, the Black Cats are reportedly looking to bolster their assault, but their attempts to acquire a new center forward have been unsuccessful thus far. While rumors of a possible deal for Matija Frigan, a prospect from KVC Westerlo, have subsided recently, reported targets Ben Brereton Diaz and Tom Cannon have both joined Championship promotion rivals Sheffield United.

However, Foot Mercato claims that Kristjaan Speakman is presently chasing a deal for Akpom and has other options on his radar. The 29-year-old has already scored eight goals and provided an assist in 30 games this season while playing for Dutch powerhouse Ajax.

According to Foot Mercato, Akpom may “sail towards new horizons” this winter even though their contract is set to expire in June 2028. In addition to Sunderland, the midfielder is reportedly attracting interest from French teams Lille and RC Lens.

Akpom made 12 first team appearances for Arsenal after starting his career there as a young player. He had enjoyable loan periods with Brentford, Coventry City, Hull City, Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Belgian team Sint-Truiden when he was in North London. He permanently left Arsenal in 2018 to sign with PAOK Salonika of Greece, although he came back to England two years later to join Middlesbrough.

Akpom scored 34 goals in 82 games during his successful time on Teesside, which persuaded Ajax to purchase him for a reported £12.2 million, including add-ons. The striker has scored 23 goals in 66 games since moving to Amsterdam.

Enzo Le Fée, a midfielder for AS Roma, is Sunderland’s lone new signing this transfer window. He is on a temporary loan that will become permanent if the Black Cats are promoted to the Premier League in the upcoming months. On the other hand, promising defender Zak Johnson has joined Notts County on loan, and newcomer Aaron Connolly completed a free transfer to Championship side Millwall.

“There is nothing [close at the moment],” head coach Regis Le Bris stated during a press conference earlier this week regarding his team’s recruitment plans. There is currently nothing to report because we are concentrating on the upcoming game. There is a lot of conjecture and rumor on the open market.

It is challenging to comment on rumors because there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes. It’s obvious that we want to support that [striker] position right now, but we need to identify the ideal profile. The issue of linkage remains. One profile may pique our curiosity, but the player must also be related to us. The meeting is still ongoing and has not yet been concluded.
