According to former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini, Nazariy Rusyn, a current Black Cats star, lacks the “class to play in the Championship.”
Arriving in Wearside during the summer transfer window in 2023, the Ukrainian has only made 32 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals, and has failed to consistently contribute to the first team picture at the Stadium of Light.
Rusyn’s only start this season came against Preston North End in the Carabao Cup in August, and he has only played 66 minutes of Championship action in eight cameo appearances. Furthermore, Gabbiadini has questioned whether the 26-year-old has enough quality to have any significant impact on the second division given that he has just played two minutes since the beginning of October.
“He [Rusyn] came on in games and tried to ruffle a few feathers, but I don’t think he quite has the class to play in the Championship,” the commentator stated on Total Sport. You must have something about you because it’s a tough league. He may not have it at that level, in my opinion.
It should come as no surprise that Rusyn has been the subject of intense exit rumors in recent weeks. The attacker has already turned down one chance to leave Sunderland this month, according to a report published by Zorya Londonsk on Wednesday. Aberdeen was “eager and quite close” to signing the 26-year-old on loan, but the deal fell through after the player turned down the offer, the outlet claims. The attacker is “currently considering other options,” according to the statement.
Accordingly, Rusyn has also been associated with going back to his own nation. The Ukrainian team FC LNZ Cherkasy was reportedly in “talks” about a potential transfer earlier in January. Rusyn and Cherkasy’s new manager, Roman Hryhorchuk, had previously worked together at Chornomorets in 2022. Both Ukrainian rivals FC Metalist 1925 Kharkiv and LNZ Cherkasy were reportedly interested in providing the midfielder with a way out of his current Wearside limbo back in December.
“It is possible something could happen there [with regards to a transfer],” Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris said in a recent press conference while discussing Rusyn’s future. Right now, we’re talking a lot about his journey and the possibilities we have for him. As previously stated, it is crucial to integrate the two concepts: the player’s purpose and the club’s and team’s mission.
Some players require minutes from time to time, and I believe that this could be a fantastic chance for him to try something new. It’s too early to tell at this point whether it will be a loan or a permanent one.
