At one point, Rabbi Matondo was signed for around £10 million. He is currently having trouble completing a move to Coventry City in the Championship. However, Sunderland may benefit from all of this.

Rabbi Matondo rose through Manchester City’s divisions before making his debut in Germany in 2019 when Schalke paid around £10 million to acquire the Welsh international from City.

Bad to worse for Rabbi Matondo after another Coventry City update, but it's more good news for Sunderland

Since then, he has had varying degrees of success, spending time on loan in both England and Europe before joining Rangers in 2022. However, the 24-year-old is now not favored at Ibrox.

Matondo has been informed by Rangers that he is free to depart the team during the January transfer window. Although Sheffield Wednesday and other teams have been linked to Matondo, Sunderland is not the only team interested in him.

However, in this transfer competition, Coventry City, led by Frank Lampard, has emerged unexpectedly. Before news broke on Wednesday night that Matondo’s transfer to Coventry City was stalled due to disagreements about bonuses and add-ons, it appeared as though they were about to finalize the deal.

The relocation of Rabbi Matondo to Coventry City is “in doubt.”
Matondo’s relocation to Coventry City has now suffered yet another setback. The move is “in doubt,” according to journalist Ben Jacobs on X, because Rangers and Coventry City are unable to agree on the terms of the contract, particularly the bonus payments.

Matondo’s relocation to Coventry is now “in doubt” rather than “stalled.” The current downward trend of the transfer will undoubtedly alarm teams like Sunderland, who have been connected to Matondo, though it is unclear if they will make a move.

Enzo Le Fee was loaned to Sunderland from Roma during the January transfer window, and additional players are anticipated before the deadline of February 3.

It’s possible that Sunderland is currently distracted by another transfer story.
It appears that the last two weeks of the January transfer window will see the arrival of new players at the Stadium of Light.

However, with Everton and West Ham apparently eager to sign the Sunderland captain before the deadline, club authorities may be preoccupied with the rumours surrounding Dan Neil’s transfer.

It would be devastating to lose him. However, Neil would be entering the final year of his deal come summer, so the Black Cats might give it some thought. Neil’s contract expires in 2026.

In any case, Sunderland’s transfer situation is intensifying as Matondo is linked to a move to Wearside and Neil is linked to a move away.
