Mike Dean comments in on Burnley’s late penalty controversy versus promotion rivals Sunderland

After giving the Black Cats two spot kicks in the closing seconds, referee Anthony Backhouse was jeered by the home crowd as he left the Turf Moor field.

Fortunately for Scott Parker’s team, goalie James Trafford made two incredible saves, both against Wilson Isidor, to guarantee the Clarets won the match 0-0.

Backhouse’s decision to judge CJ Egan-Riley’s trip on Isidor, who raced through on goal to be inside the box when replays plainly showed it was outside, was the first decision in particular that caused Burnley’s anguish.

As he examined the incident during the commentary, Sky Sports analyst Don Goodman believed Burnley had good reason to be upset over the ruling.

“Yeah, I think this is a penalty,” Mike Dean, a former top flight referee, told Sky Sports, expressing a different opinion. I have received no complaints at all from anyone. The referee made a wise choice.

The Burnley player was committed to the tackle by [Cirkin], who missed the ball and obviously got the guy.

Burnley also believed they should have been awarded a penalty early in the match when Luke O’Nien threw Zian Flemming inside the six-yard box as he was ready to score, but Backhouse firmly dismissed the calls.
