Rangers’ 2023–24 season was marked by a loss to their fiercest rivals in the Scottish Cup final and a third consecutive year of finishing second in the SPFL Premiership behind Celtic.
Rangers did win the League Cup after defeating Aberdeen, but interim chairman John Gilligan called this “a disappointing end to the season.” Rangers again lost to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League play-off round, but they performed better in the Europa League, winning their group before falling to Benfica in the round of 16.
The football club has undoubtedly been going through a difficult time, with a lot of change happening on and off the pitch during the 2023–2024 season and the summer months’, Gilligan said.
Not on the pitch The chairman is merely a temporary position, as Rangers now lack a chief executive and a director of football operations due to the departure of numerous important individuals from Ibrox. Gilligan stated that John Bennett “remains a supportive shareholder and investor in the club,” despite having to resign as chairman due to health concerns.
