Jeremy Clarkson, the legend of motorsport, attacks Hamilton’s justifications: He is too old.

Lewis Hamilton’s excuses at the F1 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix were harshly criticized by motorsport great Jeremy Clarkson, who asserted that the seven-time champion is too old to compete at the highest level. Following the Brit’s lackluster showing at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, when his teammate George Russell outperformed the seasoned driver in Sao Paulo over the course of the weekend, the Top Gear host made these remarks. The 64-year-old also questioned Hamilton’s current skills as the 39-year-old continues to struggle in the second half of the season, calling Max Verstappen’s incredible triumph at Interlagos evidence of the Dutchman’s ability.

“We learned two important things during last weekend’s Grand Prix in Brazil,” Clarkson wrote in The Sun of Hamilton’s excuses and performance. “Well, three, if you count Lance Stroll, who crashed his freshly repaired car on the formation lap. And then drove it into a gravel trap.

“First of all, Verstappen is one of the all-time greats. He may even be the greatest driver we’ve ever seen. And second, Hamilton is past his prime. He blamed his car for his tail-end qualifying session but his team mate, Russell, was on the front row.

“Of course it’s possible that because Lewis is moving to Ferrari next year, the team are filling his fuel tank with lemon barley water instead of petrol. But that seems unlikely. It’s far more probable that he’s now too old.”

The Red Bull driver, starting from 17th on the grid, finished ahead of Lando Norris as he secured a dominant win by 19.4 seconds from the runner-up, taking a defining step towards his fourth consecutive F1 title.

That means Verstappen can now claim the championship at the 2024 Las Vegas GP from November 21-23, provided he leaves Sin City with at least a 59-point margin to the McLaren star.
