Tell someone you know to see the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive effort in Sunday’s 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles if they want to test their eyes. It was among the Cowboys’ worst offensive performances ever. No, that isn’t overstating things.
At the very least, it should end any debate about Cooper Rush and Dak Prescott having comparable skill levels and offensive management abilities.
Despite Rush’s poor showing, which included a dropped shotgun snap that led to an Eagles touchdown, it took until the fourth quarter for Dallas to put in Trey Lance.
While Lance wasn’t much better than Rush, the Cowboys have nothing to lose by starting Lance for the final eight games. Despite evidence and logic screaming out to start Lance, Mike McCarthy said after the game that the team isn’t quite ready to pull the plug on Rush.
Mike McCarthy says Cowboys aren’t ready to start Trey Lance at QB
Indeed, The Cowboys is a comedy show. Rush tearing up the Eagles’ secondary in a losing performance would hardly have anyone clamoring for Lance. But Rush was historically poor. After a terrible Week 10 loss, Jerry Jones explains the Cowboys’ strategy for Mike McCarthy. READ MORE Rush’s 45 passing yards on at least 23 attempts were the second-lowest total since 2000, the year that marked the literal turn of the century.
He averaged 2.0 yards per attempt, completed 56% of his throws, and never completed a ball longer than 10 yards. He had what looked like a pee-wee quarterback’s spray chart on Next Gen Stats. We say that without showing any disrespect at all. It’s the reality.
Rush failed to convert a first-and-goal from the six-yard line (!) into a score after Micah Parsons strip-sacked Jalen Hurts. The offense went three and out three times on Rush’s last four possessions before a turnover and another Rush fumble. The Cowboys had negative five (!) yards from scrimmage and ran 12 plays during that time.
They have no motive to return the keys to Rush, even though Dallas isn’t set up for either Rush or Lance to be successful. Although he struggles with vision and accuracy, the former No. 3 overall choice at least possesses an NFL-caliber arm and can make plays with his legs.
