Wolves’ surprise January swoop of £16.5 million Signing Jurgen Klopp amidst “harsh” Liverpool treatment

Ahead of the January transfer window, Wolves and other Premier League teams are closely monitoring Wataru Endo, a midfielder for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp signed the 31-year-old from Stuttgart in 2023, but he has only played 166 minutes this season in all competitions. Endo started consistently in the Premier League and Champions League last season, making him appear worth every cent of his £16.5 million transfer fee.

However, he has since dropped well down the midfield hierarchy. According to Caught Offside, Endo’s status is being constantly monitored by Wolves, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Celtic, and AC Milan as they contemplate making offers in January. A bidding war amongst the interested clubs might start if Liverpool is willing to transfer the 65-time Japan international.

An experienced head at the base wouldn’t hurt Wolves, who already have a strong midfield after spending £21.5 million on Brazil international Andre in the summer. This season, captain Mario Lemina and promising young player Joao Gomes have had difficulty staying consistent, so some more competition might help them return to their peak.

One of Wolves’ current crop would have to move to the bench to make room for Endo, who would probably want guaranteed starts if he were to chance leaving Anfield. With Sander Berge, Andreas Pereira, and Emile Smith-Rowe presently holding their three midfield positions, Fulham’s situation is comparable.

Before adding any more midfield players, Wolves should bolster their defense because Gary O’Neil lacks depth following Yerson Mosquera’s season-ending injury. It would be wise to hold off on signing Endo or a player like him until the most urgent problem has been fixed.
