Donald Trump gained notoriety as an entrepreneur by building an empire out of his family’s business, but according to amazing stories from 1991, he briefly played goalkeeping for the Wolves academy.
Wolves supporters are playfully celebrating Donald Trump’s reelection as US president after a strange folktale the billionaire once performed for their youth squad went viral once more. After winning many key battleground states, Trump easily defeated opponent Kamala Harris in the polls to become the 47th President of the United States. He was first elected in 2016.
The 78-year-old gained notoriety as an entrepreneur by building his family’s business into an empire. He later hosted the US Apprentice TV show, but according to amazing claims from more than thirty years ago, he temporarily played goalkeeping for Wolves’ academy.
The story – which has never been verified – was initially reported in a November 1991 edition of Shoot! magazine, saying that Trump had briefly turned out for the youth side as a goalkeeper while his father worked for the US Air Force in the Midlands.
The incredible claim even alleges that Trump would go on to name one of his horses after Wolves’ stadium, though the unfounded reports have never been circulated by any major outlet since.
“Billionaire tycoon Donald Trump once played six games in goal for Wolves’ youth team while his American Air Force father was based in the Midlands,” the report stated.
One of the racehorses at Trump’s New York stables is a three-year-old filly called Molineux Mayde.”
But before you start cracking jokes about the face matching the kit, there seems to be more than a few holes in the tall tale. For one, it is understood Trump Jr. only had one one foray into horse racing, a horse going by the name of DJ Trump, rather than anything to do with the Wolves stadium.
There is also the fact that by the time a young Donald would have been old enough to turn out in an academy game, his father – born in 1905 – would have been far beyond the age of any military action.
Still, that hasn’t stopped Wolves fans from discussing the rumours on Twitter and poking fun at the baffling story – with one even joking they could claim it as their “first win of the season”.
One made a joke in reference to one of Trump’s most controversial decisions during his first presidency, writing: “Can we just imagine him when the opposition are about to take a free kick: ‘Build a wall’.”
Another commented: “I will be highly disappointed if it isn’t reported that Wolves fans are singing ‘He’s one of our own, he’s one of our own’ at the next home game.” “Make Wolves great again,” jokingly said a third, while another remarked: “The Molineux stadium is the route to the White House.”
