The question of whether Aberdeen can contend with Celtic for the championship is a topic of much discussion in Scottish football. They are now in a title race, albeit it is still early, but with this Celtic team, they can easily defeat anyone.
As they demonstrated in Parkhead over the weekend, they are doing everything they can from the opposing viewpoint. The point suited Jimmy Thelin’s team more than the champions themselves, as Celtic let a two-goal lead go against Aberdeen. The Bhoys are leading the Premiership after eight games, tied with Aberdeen on points but leading by a wide margin (+21 to +9) on goal differential.
You feel it’s going to require something special for the Dons to seriously challenge and Chris Sutton was asked a ‘really interesting question’ about it all.
Can other teams help Aberdeen in the title race with Celtic?
Not only do Aberdeen have to play as close to their maximum as possible, but they also require Rodgers and his players to falter now and again.
On the domestic circuit, Celtic is a different animal and can even win the title at 80%, but in the Champions League, it’s a different story. According to Sutton, who spoke to The Monday Night Club, Rory Smith requested whether other clubs might assist Aberdeen because doing so would pave the road for the squad to win the championship. Sutton stated, “Aberdeen is a big club in Scotland, but they haven’t been consistent in recent seasons.” “They didn’t fare well the previous season. Expectations are high, yet European football is absent. That is a huge advantage for them. Do they have as deep a squad as Rangers and Celtic? Most likely not.
“Can you see enough of the other teams taking points away from Celtic for Aberdeen to have a pathway to the title?” Smith questioned.
“That’s a really interesting question,” Sutton said. Despite Ross County’s best efforts, Celtic managed to cross the finish line. Celtic may lose. Rangers, who are now a really intriguing case, haven’t even been included in the calculation, so Aberdeen must be quite perfect. If Aberdeen can continue to outperform every other team, I do believe that the belief has grown. The matches versus Rangers and Celtic will be huge. You simply don’t know if they can continue to linger.
Celtic’s upcoming fixtures in the Premiership
These coming weeks will be interesting for Rodgers, especially given that Aberdeen and Rangers will lock horns.
This could be the period where the holders run away with it, especially when you look at who they have coming up in the Premiership.
Celtic’s only distraction can be the Champions League, but then again, the squad is way too strong for that to happen.
