Despite his injury struggles, the fans would welcome the Celtic and Scotland player back to Parkhead with open arms. Andy Walker thinks Arsenal outcast Kieran Tierney would examine a “number” of January transfer possibilities before deciding on his next move.
The injury-prone Scotland international was reportedly open to returning to Parkhead this winter, and his Premier League club was willing to approve his departure, with a loan transfer being considered the most likely scenario, according to reports earlier this week.
Since Tierney was seen chatting with Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers at the Celtic FC Foundation gala dinner in London last week, there have been rumblings on social media about a potential return to Glasgow’s east end. Supporters were thrilled about the possibility that the Lennoxtown graduate will return to Scotland in order to restart his career as a result.
Tierney, who is now ranked third at the Emirates after Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ricardo Calafiori, had earlier said that he wouldn’t rule out making a historic return to Celtic history, saying, “Who knows? In football, you never know. If I were to leave any club, I imagine I would still be connected to this connection, so you never know.
The boyhood Celtic fan won eight trophies and made 170 appearances during his time in Glasgow before clinching a £25million transfer. He is still a firm favourite among the club’s fanbase, but consistent injury problems have limited his game time in recent seasons.
Walker has cast his verdict on whether Tierney re-joining Celtic is a realistic possibility. Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, he explained: “I think it might be an option, but he’ll have a number of options. He’s already been over to Spain, I think Kieran’s problem just now is he’s just too prone to injury, we all know what he can do, he was just a fabulous player for Celtic and really deserved that move to the top-flight.
It worked out for him for a spell, but when you keep picking up niggling injuries, it’s really difficult to keep going and get a run of games. That’s what you want him to do, but he’ll definitely have options, Celtic being one of them.
Walker continued, “I don’t know if he’s maybe been overplayed when he was younger, I don’t know if that’s a consideration for him,” in reference to the number of games Tierney played in the early part of his career. All I can do is wish him well and hope he can regain his level of fitness. Playing every game during a whole season is the best thing ever. “I am aware of the expectations; in a season, you may play 50/60 or even nearly 70 games at times. We’ve seen it with Callum McGregor in the past, and while there’s currently a lot of discussion around an excess of players and an excessively demanding schedule, all you really want for Kieran Tierney is for him to be available each and every week.
