Wolves’ winless record in the Premier League after seven games has worried supporters. Given their schedule, Wanderers have had an extremely difficult start to the season.
However, Wolves’ defense has occasionally been appalling, and they have also been unable to capitalize on winning opportunities. For the time being, the Wolves board has supported Gary O’Neil.
He is undoubtedly a man under pressure, though. Wolves have two more really difficult games left against Brighton and Manchester City before facing Crystal Palace, Southampton, Fulham, and Bournemouth.
That might be a turning point in the Wolves manager’s career. He might lose his job if he doesn’t earn enough points from those games. And Sergio Conceicao is someone who should be taken into consideration to be the future manager at Molineux if the board does believe a change is necessary.
Sergio Conceicao enjoyed a fantastic stint at FC Porto
Currently, there haven’t really been any reports suggesting Sergio Conceicao is of interest to Wolves.
However, some bookies consider him to be among the contenders, and if O’Neil is fired, Wolves might fare far worse than him. Conceicao left FC Porto in the summer after leading the team for seven years; he is single at the moment.
As the team’s head coach, Conceicao actually took over from Nuno Espirito Santo, ushering in one of the most prosperous eras in the team’s history. Only Jorge Jesus has more league titles in Portuguese football than he did with the club, having won three of them.
Conceicao left Porto with a very impressive win rate of 72.3%.
As per Breaking The Lines, he placed a big focus on playing ‘possession-heavy football’, and ‘heavy pressing’. The suggestion is that he played a high-risk brand of football, so he would perhaps need a good level of backing in January so that he has the players to carry out his philosophy.
Wolves have been linked with Sergio Conceicao before
It will be very interesting to see if Conceicao does become someone of interest to Wolves if results do not pick up.
He may not have been linked recently, but it was reported in May 2021 by Fabrizio Romano that Wolves did shortlist Conceicao as they looked to replace Nuno Espirito Santo.
Conceicao was linked with Wolves again following the sacking of Bruno Lage in October 2022
Fans have suggested on social media that Wolves should now give Conceicao significant consideration for an appointment. For the time being, though, it appears O’Neil will have the opportunity to make things better. O’Neil still has a lot of supporters who think he can succeed at Wolves, according to Matt Jarvis.
For the Englishman, though, outcomes are now everything. But, if O’Neil doesn’t get enough points in the following six games, there may be further stories of Wolves showing interest in Conceicao, a player the team is obviously extremely aware of.
