Supporters of Wolves have been looking for explanations for why their team has been struggling so hard in 2024–2025. With seven Premier League games played, Wolves is at the bottom of the table, signifying an extremely difficult first couple of months.
Fans are becoming more and more alarmed as Gary O’Neil has only taken one point thus far. However, the Wolves board continues to support O’Neil at this time. Given the challenging schedule, nobody really anticipated anything more than a challenging beginning.
However, the manner Wolves have played, particularly their poor defense, has disturbed observers. Wolves are where they are at the moment for a number of reasons. Also, former winger Matt Jarvis brought up a comment about something that has severely hurt O’Neil.

In the summer, Wolves made just two significant sales. Pedro Neto signed a £52 million contract to join Chelsea, while Max Kilman sealed a £40 million move to West Ham United.

Now that Matt Jarvis has spoken his opinions, he feels that Wolves have really suffered a “massive” loss as a result of Kilman and Neto’s summer departure. “The biggest problem for him is that they sold his best two players, Pedro Neto (circle, bottom) and Max Kilman (circle, top), and they have struggled to bring anyone in to cover those positions,” he said to the Mirror (print edition, 09/10, page 55).
It’s extremely difficult if that happens to any team. You don’t want to keep selling your players but ultimately, with financial restrictions, I think that’s the reason why they had to do it with Kilman and Neto and that’s cost them massively.
“I understand that the fans are upset because the performances—and maybe the results—haven’t been up to par.” Jarvis does believe that O’Neil can turn things around for Wolves, saying, “He deserves that run of games to show what he and the team can do.
He’s been through all the hard part.” “However, I have every confidence that they have the players, mindset, and manager to get them through it.”
Wolves must turn performances into points
O’Neil has received the backing of his superiors, but the Wolves manager undoubtedly needs points on the board now.
There have been positive elements in some Wolves performances this season. But you can only get away with that so many times before questions get asked.
O’Neil must figure out how to translate performances into points. Andy Thompson, a former full-back, said that Wolves needed to become “horrible,” and it’s fair to say that Wolves need merely get meaner, more direct, and more aggressive.
There are two more really challenging games to come. After Brighton’s away match and Manchester City’s home game, there will be a lot of expectation following those matches. As he did at Molineux the previous season, O’Neil may opt to play a back three with wing-backs against City.
