Chris Sutton has used similarities between Scottish football and the caliber of teams like Manchester United to counter Robbie Savage’s criticism of Celtic’s Champions League status.
Following Celtic’s 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in Germany last week, the former Blackburn Rovers player and steadfastly outspoken pundit questioned Celtic’s record in European football during a debate on BBC 606 (as reported by CeltsAreHere).
Speaking to Sutton, Savage remarked, “What goes around, Celtic in Europe? They do lose badly to the best teams in European football, but you can’t be [defeat by] seven. They have suffered heavy losses to [Barcelona], Dortmund, and other clubs.
In response, Sutton highlighted how little money clubs with greater financial support have compared to those with less, citing the example of Celtic and Rangers and their inability to compete at the highest level of club football. “It’s an easy attack, isn’t it, on Scottish football?” he remarked.
Rob, why don’t you go after Manchester United? “Millions and millions. Imagine if Celtic and Rangers could afford to spend $600 million on players over the course of three years and yet get mediocre results.
Simply put, Scottish teams lack the financial resources. You only have one game open. You mentioned nothing about Celtic winning the first game, as I saw. Why did you wait eight games to evaluate the Celtics and Rangers?”
