Ianis Hagi sends heartfelt statement following Rangers’ victory

Ianis Hagi maintains he will be ‘forever thankful’ for his reception from the Rangers crowd upon returning to Ibrox.

After being frozen out for several months, fans showered the 25-year-old with a standing ovation as he returned to the pitch for a first-team match.

After settling a disagreement with the club about a contractual matter last week, Philippe Clement granted him permission to be called up from the B team to the main team. In August 2023, the Romanian international made his final appearance for the Light Blues in a League Cup matchup against Morton.

But he finally got to represent the Ibrox giants again in Sunday night’s comfortable 2-0 victory over St Johnstone.

The playmaker assisted Vaclav Cerny for his second goal of the evening in the Scottish Premiership encounter.

His appearance was cut short though, as Hagi was sent off following a VAR check for a challenge on Benji Kimpioka.

Hagi looked visibly upset after he caught the striker high on his shin, but the red card means he will now be out for the next two league games against Kilmarnock and St Mirren. He’ll also miss the Europa League tie against Steaua Bucharest as he’s not named in the squad.

Emotional about last night, Hagi thanked the Rangers faithful for backing him as they warmly accepted him back at Ibrox.

He wrote: “Ibrox, thank you. I will forever be grateful for last night’s reception.”

Ally McCoist, meantime, has expressed regret to Rangers fans for unintentionally ignoring an Ibrox homage. The Rangers hero was praised by his former team during the match against Lyon after receiving an OBE the previous week. While providing commentary for the Europa League match, McCoist, 62, was not aware of a video tribute that was shown on the main screen at Ibrox.
