Rangers taunt returns to haunt Malmo boss, who rages, “obviously I’m stupid.”

Rangers broke the Swedish European hoodoo of Malmo, forcing their manager Henrik Rydstrom to retract his remarks.

The Swedes, who had eliminated the Germans from the Champions League twice recently, had an undefeated record against them.In the lead-up to last night’s opener, the club’s social media team did not hesitate to remind its Europa League adversaries of that fact. Recalling their victories in previous confrontations, Malmo lighted the blue touchpaper by stating, “You were in the fourth division when we met in 2011.” You were in the Europa League final when we first met in 2021. Rangers, welcome back to Malmo. You’ve been missed.

Then before the game, confident Rydstrom claimed his side would “probably” beat Philippe Clement’s side and insisted he was fully behind the club’s online video. However, his words came back to haunt him as Rangers stormed to a 2-0 victory at the Eleda Stadion. And last night, the Swede returned to face the press with his tail between his legs as he let rip in a post-match meltdown.

“This is a problem we’ve had for a damn long time,” Rydstrom continued, lamenting Gabriel Busanello’s error that resulted in Nedim Bajrami’s early goal.

We don’t play the ball backwards to our goalie, as I’ve attempted to make clear to my players. Our playmakers are not our goalkeepers. We made passes that I don’t really understand, both lateral and towards home, instead of assuming the duty to play forward.”
