Maurice Ross shares blunt response over what Kris Boyd has said about Rangers, Celtic

Maurice Ross has issued a blunt response to Kris Boyd and his claims that Rangers and Celtic should be worried about Tony Bloom’s investment in Hearts.

The Brighton & Hove Albion owner is in talks with the Scottish Premiership side over a £10m investment that would see Hearts adopt his analytical company for player identification and recruitment [Sky Sports, 18 September].

Boyd spoke about the news on Sky Sports [18 September, 10:30am] and believes the investment should have Rangers and Celtic worried.

He said: “They’ve caused problems for the big ones, so if I’m Rangers and Celtic, I’m worried about his appointment – if I’m Hearts, I’m biting your hands off.

“Rangers and Celtic should be worried. There is potential for Hearts to go and challenge Rangers and Celtic. This could be a big thing for Scottish football.”

In response to those comments, ex-Rangers player Ross posted via his personal X account [19 September]: “Zzzzz”.

Rangers and Celtic should be worried about Hearts
If there is one fundamental, albeit well-documented, factor that separates Rangers and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, it is the club’s opposing finances.

After five games of the new season, the class divide is regrettably very evident. The Gers were compelled to scrape for every euro they could make this summer to reinvest into the side. However, considering Brighton’s success in the transfer market under Bloom’s direction, his possible investment may completely alter the landscape.

The Seagulls only made it possible to spend an eye-watering £194 million on player additions this summer thanks to the £200 million in player sales they’ve generated over the previous two years. Most famously, Moises Caicedo, who signed for £4 million the year before, was sold to Chelsea for £110 million in 2023. This is precisely the kind of deal Rangers should be making if the team are serious about fighting Celtic. However, many, including Ross, are somewhat unbothered by the news. Rangers lack this sense of shrewdness in the transfer market at Ibrox. Rangers are going to have a lot more competition in Scottish football when you include in a Hearts team that has an eye for a deal in Bloom.
