Rangers namechecked in Slovan Bratislava appraisal; Thierry Henry justifies ‘simple’ Celtic title assumption

Thierry Henry, who evaluated the Hoops’ thrashing of Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, said that Celtic’s title battle versus Rangers is seen as “easy”.

Matchday one saw Brendan Rodgers’ team perform admirably, crushing their opponents 5-1 at Parkhead to earn their first-ever opening-night victory in the league.

Henry acknowledged that Slovan was not on the same level as a more conventional Champions League opponent, but he was nonetheless pleased by the efforts and quality on show in Glasgow.

The legendary player for Arsenal and France did, however, congratulate the Celts on their win and highlight the significance of the competition’s leap from the Scottish Premiership, where it’s essentially a two-horse race.

And that’s why Celtic can be proud of their achievements thanks to goals from Liam Scales, Kyogo, Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah.

“It was a big night because, more often than not, when you are dominating your league, people think it’s easy to win your league,” said Henry. “And they beat Rangers not so long ago. It’s easy, whatever they say.

“They had an opportunity to play against a team that I think was, let’s put it this way, not the best. It’s a great start, to play against Bratislava at home, no disrespect to Bratislava. The way you started, it’s a great way to be able to have three points early doors.”
