In Big D, unrest is brewing? Following a heartbreaking defeat in Week 2, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Cowboys DE Micah Parsons have differing perspectives on the outcome.
It’s very Dallas Cowboys-ish to win big one week and then lose horribly the next, which is exactly what the team accomplished. The Cowboys visited Cleveland in the opening week of the 2024 season, dominating on both sides of the ball.
The offense of the Cowboys scored 33 points against the formidable Browns defense, who were ranked first in 2023. With six sacks, two interceptions, and a forced fumble, the Cowboys’ defense was unrelenting in the meantime.
The Cowboys appeared to be ready to compete at the highest level after signing quarterback Dak Prescott and adding defensive line depth. Week two saw it all collapse.
The New Orleans Saints won 44-19 to make a statement, just as they had hoped when they entered AT&T Stadium.
The Saints’ defense came out swinging, recording eight pass breakups, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and three sacks. The offense scored on fifteen consecutive possessions, and RB Alvin Kamara showed the league just how dangerous he is with 115 rushing yards, 65 receiving yards, and four touchdowns.
Following the loss, the Cowboys’ defense was called into question. New defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, Mike Zimmer told reporters on Monday he didn’t think the team’s effort was an issue. But defensive star Micah Parsons disagreed.
According to Parsons’ podcast, “The Edge with Micah Parsons,” there wasn’t much effort put in. “Not all eleven made the effort…There were gaps in the fundamentals of the football game.
At the end of the day, you have an expectation of yourself going into training camp and during this season-preparation process. We failed to meet that expectation. Was it the planning? What was it? I’m not sure,” yelled Parsons.
Parsons went on to say he wants to see the Cowboys get back on the right track and that he wanted to be “that guy” for them this season. Zimmer stated during the news conference on Monday that the Saints’ victory was the only reason they lost, not a problem with effort.
“Quite a few occasions, they [Saints] beat us off the snap…That’s my problem, I had to get them better ready to play than that. I spoke with them about it during the week, but in the end, we didn’t go forward quickly enough. They obviously had a strong plan, but we worked on it,” Zimmer said.
Even though their justifications differ, the defensive commanders accepted responsibility for the defeat, which might be the proper move if they want to rebound.
The Cowboys now have to be ready for the Baltimore Ravens, another team with a strong offensive line. This Week 3 game is critical for both teams and their hopes of making the playoffs after the Ravens lost 0-2 in Week 2.
