Stephen A. Smith trolls the Cowboys after their Week 2 blowout loss to the Saints
There are so many traditions in football. We can look forward to Lambeau Leaps, Carrie Underwood’s Sunday Night Football song, and Thanksgiving turkey legs every autumn. But there’s one that’s been around for a while, expanding almost as much as the others, and it might be the most entertaining. Naturally, this occurrence involves the Dallas Cowboys suffering humiliating defeats, which are then followed by a vicious trolling campaign from the venerable ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith. Regardless of the Cowboys’ level of performance during a particular season, they will nearly invariably manage to lose a number of games in an extremely perplexing way. This past week was one of those times.
Although a 44-19 home defeat to the New Orleans Saints as heavy favorites is shocking, it’s not quite the same as a Dallas playoff meltdown considering it’s only Week 2. Even if the Saints looked great in Week 1, it’s difficult to evaluate a team when they’re facing the hopeless Carolina Panthers. Nevertheless, Cowboys supporters went into Sunday feeling optimistic, still high from their dominant season-opening victory over the Cleveland Browns on the road. Soon after the Cowboys game concluded, Smith shared a funny video on Twitter/X. It began with only the screen, but it gradually paned to show Smith grinning and laughing heartily.
He also used the clip as a teaser for his Monday shows on ESPN, First Take and The Stephen A. Smith Show, expressing his excitement to break down the Dallas failure, stating that “Monday can’t come soon enough.” Sure enough, when Monday morning came, the legendary sports talk show host came prepared to continue messing with the Cowboys and their fans.He opened up the First Take segment by once again smirking and spinning his chair to face the camera, before letting out an exuberant “Howdy! How do you do on this beautiful Monday morning?” He noted that he was told that there was a city in Texas named “Allas,” and while he was not familiar with such a place, he realized that all he’d need to do was take the “D” away from “Dallas” to solve the problem. This was a reference to the failures of the Cowboys defense on Sunday, as they failed to force the Saints punt unit onto the field even once.
Smith has always loved New York sports, but he is also well-known for being a Pittsburgh Steelers supporter. It should come as no surprise that Smith takes pleasure in their suffering whenever he has the chance, considering the hostility that exists between the Cowboys and every NFL team in the Northeast as well as their three memorable Super Bowl encounters with the Steelers.
