Why was Ademola Lookman’s goal during Rwanda vs. Nigeria not allowed?
After a controversially disallowed goal by Ademola Lookman in the 23rd minute of their goalless draw against Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to challenge the officiating. Nigeria was upset by the decision, which was rendered by Egyptian referee Mohamed Maarouf Eid Mansour, since they dominated possession and created multiple opportunities but were unable to score a victory.
Lookman’s goal was disallowed during a Super Eagles long throw-in. Lookman headed the ball into the net following a precise attempt by Ola Aina, causing the Nigerian players to celebrate. However, the referee quickly ruled out the goal, citing a foul in the buildup by Nigerian defender Ajayi. This decision sparked confusion, as replays showed minimal contact between Ajayi and the Rwandan player.
According to Nsikakabasi Akpan, a SportsRation correspondent, referee Mansour thought Ajayi had fouled an opponent in the build-up to the goal. The goal would have probably stood if Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium had Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment. The referee may have been given a closer look at the event and the decision may have been overturned with a VAR review. In order to avoid mistakes brought on by snap decisions, this circumstance has reignited the discussion about the necessity of improved officiating equipment at all levels of international football. At first appearance, it appeared to be a foul, but closer examination revealed that it wasn’t. The result of the game would have been altered by VAR, Akpan said.
Nigeria made every attempt to break the deadlock, but Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari’s outstanding play foiled them. Nigeria was frustrated as Ntwari produced three superb stops to deny Lookman, Victor Boniface, and substitute Victor Osimhen. Nigeria remains top of the group despite the draw, but the game will always be associated with the controversy over Lookman’s goal that was disallowed. Fans and commentators continue to wonder if officiating mistakes cost the Super Eagles a crucial victory in the absence of video assistant review. With a goal to get back to winning ways, Nigeria will now turn their attention to their upcoming AFCON qualifier against Libya.
