Bennett stands down after 18 months at the helmThe Rangers have announced that John Bennett, their chairman, has resigned due to health concerns. Since taking over from Douglas Park in March 2023, the 61-year-old has been the chairman. Previously, he served as vice-chairman.
Bennett faced criticism when the Light Blues had to play their home games at Hampden Park at the beginning of the season due to a postponed renovation of the Copland Stand at Ibrox.
The Rangers board have come in for more criticism after a poor start to the campaign, with the Gers most recently losing 3-0 to Old Firm rivals Celtic at Parkhead before the international break.
Bennett’s resignation leaves the club seeking two key appointments with the CEO position remaining vacant since the departure of James Bisgrove in April.
Former director John Gilligan has been appointed temporary chairman.
“The Board of Rangers Football Club today announces Chairman, John Bennett, is stepping down with immediate effect for health reasons,” stated a statement released by the team. “The Board wishes John a full and expeditious recovery and expresses its sincere gratitude for his service and noteworthy commitment over the last nine years. At this time, it is desired that the privacy of him and his family be respected. “Until a permanent replacement is named, John Gilligan, a former director, will serve as chairman in an interim capacity.
The Board appreciates John’s quick response and feels his extensive expertise in senior corporate roles from his lengthy and successful career, along with his background as a previous director of Rangers, will be very helpful at this time.
With the assistance of expert consultants, the Board is conducting a thorough process to appoint a CEO and a chairperson. The club’s executive management group will keep running the organization day-to-day in the interim.
