2024 FIFA U-20 Women Show Piece: Falconets risk everything to defeat Venezuela
The Nigeria Super Falconets play their third Group D encounter at Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia, on Saturday (today). The team’s goals are to improve their reputation and earn the points necessary to advance to the next round of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup versus Venezuela. After defeating South Korea 1-0 in their first game, Christopher Danjuma’s team is reeling from a 3-1 loss to Germany in their second game on Wednesday. They will take on their South American opponents today at 21:00 with the knowledge that a win or a draw will guarantee a trip to the round of 16.
For Nigeria, who have competed in every competition since it began in 2002, the equation is much simpler because they will advance as one of the top two teams in the group along with Germany, who secured their spot with their victory over Nigeria on Wednesday, or they will draw. Only a victory will keep Venezuela’s hopes of qualifying alive; however, they will still have to wait on outcomes from other matches. Nigeria has only lost one of their previous five games against South American sides, winning three and drawing one of those encounters. The South Americans have yet to win a U-20 Women’s World Cup match. They have lost four and drew one of their five games at the tournament.
Germany and South Korea will play in the group’s other match at Estadio de Techo in Bogota, beginning at 15:00. After missing multiple opportunities in a scoreless draw with Venezuela in their previous match, Korea Republic’s hopes of qualifying directly are no longer in their own hands. In order to secure a spot in the top two, Venezuela must defeat Germany and also triumph over Nigeria.
Having already guaranteed passage to the second round, Katrin Peter’s team can take a more cautious approach, and the Asian country will be eager to punish any complacency that may develop from the three-time champions. The sides’ last two U-20 Women’s World Cup matches were won by Germany. In the 2010 semi-final, they won 5-1, and in the 2016 group stage, they won 2-0. The goal for Korea Republic is to go to the knockout stages for the first time since 2014.
