Rangers issue ‘frustrated’ statement after St Johnstone delay as SPFL knock back ‘number of alternative options’

After it was revealed that their matchup with St Johnstone will take place on a Sunday night next month, Rangers released a statement expressing their dissatisfaction. The encounter between the two Premiership teams was just one of thirteen games rescheduled to make room for television broadcasts and European football teams, such as the Light Blues participating in the Europa League this season. In addition, a number of highways will be closed for the Great Scottish Run on October 6, which would have made it challenging for supporters to attend the match at Ibrox. But the SPFL’s decision to reject them and have the game played at an unusual time on a Saturday still irritated the Gers, even after they offered “a number of alternative options”.

“Rangers’ Scottish Premiership match against St Johnstone on Sunday, October 6th, has been rescheduled for an 8pm kickoff,” the statement stated. “Many roads around Glasgow’s Southside will be closed until late in the afternoon on that day due to the Great Scottish Run, making safe and effective access to the game difficult for a customary afternoon kickoff. “Rangers proposed several other ideas, such as reversing the schedule and starting the game early, but all of them were rejected by the other parties. We play Lyon on Thursday night, so it is not possible for us to play on Saturday. We also can’t play on Monday night because it falls during the international window.

“The club is fully cognisant of the inconvenience this will cause to many of our supporters, and we share in your frustration at this situation.
“We will keep in touch with all relevant parties, including as public transportation companies and Glasgow City Council, and notify fans about access arrangements and routes in the vicinity of the game. “After the Sunday 8 p.m. time slot was changed, Premier Sports also decided to broadcast live TV coverage of this game. “Our match the previous weekend with Hibernian has moved to Sunday, 29 September at 12noon and will be screened by Sky Sports.”
