After James Ward-Prowse’s “quality” transfer, a crucial question regarding Nottingham Forest remains.

Newest transfer decision for Nottingham Forest following Reds’ addition of Nuno Espirito Santo to their roster on deadline day

Final day of signing James Ward-Prowse can help Nottingham Forest climb the Premier League standings both on and off the field. However, it remains unclear how the West Ham United loanee will fit into the Reds’ lineup. Will the midfield player, who has a ton of experience and skill with the free kick, start right away at the City Ground?

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s depth throughout the pitch is demonstrated by the presence of Ward-Prowse as a viable option. As Max Hayes, Sarah Clapson, and Bal Bansal discussed this week on NottinghamshireLive’s Garibaldi Red podcast, it also means that the newest recruit could have to wait for his opportunity. Here is a summary of what was said.

We discuss set-pieces, and Forest has made every effort to address those concerns throughout the transfer window. Nikola Milenkovic can provide defensive support at one end of the pitch while Ward-Prowse can assist at the other. The team has made an effort to solve the issue of set-pieces by adding players who have the ability to have a significant impact.

“It’s a real headache for Nuno trying to fit all of these players in. It’s a headache that he wants, I’m sure, but trying to find the right combinations and find the right set-up is going to be interesting.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing Ward-Prowse. It’s not just the fact that he’s a quality player, it’s the fact he’s got experience as well. He’s got a lot to offer.

“Talking to people around the club who saw him on his first day, they were saying you can tell he’s a good egg in the dressing room and is a really nice guy. He’s also got that bit of knowledge about him, and I think that can make a difference.”

MH: “It’s going to be an interesting one, where he does fit in. James Ward-Prowse is a name himself and Forest now have so much depth in the midfield. Obviously, Danilo will be out now for a good few months with his injury.

“But you just wonder where Ward-Prowse fits in, really, with the set-up. Almost a case of don’t fix what’s not broken, but then he is such a key player that you almost want to get him into that starting XI, don’t you?

It’s going to take a little bit of time to adapt and adjust, but I think they look like they’ve got something about them. They look like really positive signings.

“Being able to call on them is a big plus. And also, it is that little bit of competition for Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga who didn’t really have that last season.

“Depending on what formation Nuno went with, those two were almost guaranteed a place in the starting line-up last season because there was no real competition for them. Now they’ve got players breathing down their necks, it means the onus is on them to step up and keep performing well to keep their place in the team. They know there’s somebody right behind them waiting to get in the side who can make an impact as well.”
