Cowboys Make Polarizing Decision on Quarterback Depth Chart
On Labor Day morning, the Dallas Cowboys revealed a major roster change that has generated a lot of debate among fans and experts alike. The move affects Cooper Rush and Trey Lance’s competition for the backup quarterback spot behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott, which has been widely followed during the offseason. Trey Lance, the previous third overall pick, will not provide Prescott any backup. Rather, it will be seasoned player Cooper Rush, who signed with the Cowboys following the 2017 NFL Draft as an undrafted free agency. Mike McCarthy, the head coach, revealed the news at his press conference on Monday morning. Considering the different routes Rush and Lance took to get into the NFL, several people are astonished by this decision. Cooper Rush is the Cowboys’ number-two quarterback, according to Mike McCarthy.
Lance, acquired from the San Francisco 49ers for a fourth-round pick in 2023, has shown glimpses of the talent that led to his high draft selection but has struggled with consistency, particularly during preseason games where turnovers have been a problem. His struggles were evident in the preseason game against the Chargers, where he threw five interceptions.
Cooper Rush, on the other hand, has only attempted six passes in two games during this year’s preseason. But having filled in for Prescott several times since joining the Cowboys, he brings a wealth of backup knowledge to the table. Rush has made six starts and has won five of them. In 2022, he lost by a tight margin to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Despite the fact that Lance’s play has not lived up to the pre-draft expectations, McCarthy said he is still “encouraged” by the quarterback’s preseason progress. Prescott is still the team’s undisputed leader, so McCarthy and Cowboys supporters alike likely hope they won’t have to see either Rush or Lance on the field as the Cowboys get ready for their season opening against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, September 8, at 4:25 PM ET.
