Russell Martin blames Rangers as he blasts Ibrox giants for Sam Edozie transfer fail
Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, placed the responsibility on Rangers when winger Sam Edozie’s Deadline Day loan transfer to Ibrox collapsed. In an interview with the Southern Daily Echo on September 1, Martin said that Edozie’s last-minute attempt to join Glasgow had failed because the 21-year-old had run out of time to find a new team. Edozie was “keen” to join, but the move never materialized because Southampton apparently had high expectations for the Gers to fulfill before approving a loan north of the border [The Sun, 1 September]. Martin expressed his frustration, saying, “It wasn’t on our end, and it fell through so late.”To Sam, I believe it’s a little unfair.
“I was gutted for Sam because it was too late to then find another opportunity to go and play football.”
Rangers do enough on Deadline Day despite Sam Edozie impasse
Philippe Clement and his Gers side, despite the 11th-hour failure of Edozie’s loan move to Ibrox, still had a very busy day on 30 August, with four players heading in and out of the doors at Auchenhowie.
Todd Cantwell and Scott Wright’s exits to clubs in the EFL Championship and League One respectively freed up much-needed space in the squad for Clement, which he’s filled with two exciting signings.Neraysho Kasanwirjo will provide much-needed competition for James Tavernier at right-back this season after his loan move from Feyenoord, with the Gers captain staying put despite reports of an exit.
In addition, the £3.3 million acquisition of Nedim Bajrami from Sassuolo represents a notable improvement over players such as Cantwell and Wright; nonetheless, Edozie might have been considered a final addition. Bajrami can play both the wide areas and the number 10 position, and as Cantwell was eliminated from first-team consideration, Clement won’t view Edozie’s inability to join as a direct replacement for Wright as a major loss
