Former Aberdeen manager Keith Wyness has maintained that Rangers ought to earn more than £18 million should they advance to this season’s Europa League final. The 66-year-old, who led Aberdeen from 2000 to 2004, also held extended leadership positions at Everton and Aston Villa, and currently operates a football advisory business that counsels elite teams, stated in an interview for the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that it is “absolutely crucial” that the Scottish powerhouses generate as much revenue from the competition as possible in order to strengthen their financial position.

In the third Champions League qualifying round, Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine defeated Rangers. While their Old Firm rivals Celtic will be participating in the Champions League following their Scottish Premiership victory last season, the Glasgow team will have to make do with a spot in the Europa League.

But Rangers’ new-look league phase schedule in the Europa League has them playing Union Saint-Gilloise, Malmo, FCSB, Nice, Tottenham, Manchester United, Lyon, Olympiakos, and Olympiakos. Rangers needs to guarantee their spot in the Europa League playoffs. Wyness thinks it’s critical for Philippe Clement’s team to advance to the knockout stages in order to maintain their lead over Celtic.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There is money to be made in the Europa League.

“It’s nowhere near the Champions League riches, it’s about four times less than the Champions League in terms of where they are right now.

“But it’s imperative that Rangers receive that compensation. “I believe they earned almost £18 million when they previously advanced to the Europa League final. “If they make it to the final, they ought to be earning more than that if you look at it, ideally with a new and improved revenue source.

“But they have got to advance at least into the next few stages.

“They have got to do that because Rangers need that money desperately.”
