Why wolves make a major U-turn for an attacking pair for £43.5 million as Gary O’Neill reveals a new strategy

Following Wolves’ 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Burnley, Gary O’Neil revealed a shocking Wolves transfer.Despite interest from other teams, Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently planning to retain offensive combination Gonçalo Guedes and Daniel Podence at the club.

Although it was anticipated that both wingers would leave during the summer transfer window in an effort to recoup some of the £43.5 million in total transfer costs paid, O’Neil has chosen to provide promises over playing time.

All things considered, this is a rather big U-turn, especially in light of earlier concerns about attitude and mentality.

Wednesday night, Wolves defeated Burnley to go to the Carabao Cup third round. Guedes scored the game’s only two goals. Podence also started.

Another winger who has been linked to a move away but is expected to stay, Chiquinho, participated in the whole 90 minutes at Molineux.

Even though the exits of Pedro Neto and Maximilian Kilman to West Ham United and Chelsea brought in a staggering £92 million, O’Neil has been unable to spend freely, which has made the summer difficult for Wolves.

It’s known that the Old Gold intend to sign Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace and Andre from Fluminense before Friday’s deadline, but other transactions may present challenges.

If another move needs to be made, center-back is the next priority, with the current crop covering the wings. Or, at the very least, O’Neil has proposed.

After the match against Burnley, the head coach told Express & Star, “The transfer window hasn’t gone quite as we’d have liked so far, but Daniel [Podence], Guedes, and Chiquinho have been great.” O’Neil continued, “I expect Guedes and Podence to be here after the window.”
