Derek Ferguson says it’s concerning that Rangers won’t sign another striker before the transfer season ends since Cyriel Dessers is now the team’s mainstay.
On August 20, Luca Bendoni said via X that Atlanta United was considering a £4.5 million move for the Nigerian international, but they were unable to come to a mutually acceptable arrangement.
Furthermore, Chris Jack stated on the website of The Rangers Review on August 27 that the lack of an MLS exit implies that a new number nine is no longer anticipated to arrive by the deadline.
Ferguson is relieved that the Dessers deal fell through because the Gers have no other options with a sidelined Danilo and an unobserved Hamza Igamane, but he worries that no new signing will be made.
He stated exclusively to Ibrox News: “Players need to come in and challenge if you want to challenge Celtic as a club the size of Rangers.”
“Dessers is currently not facing any challenges, which is why you should commend him for his attitude.
Given the amount of abuse and criticism he has received, he could easily say, ‘I’m going to get another club.'” However, he declined to go last week, so we must be grateful that he is currently scoring goals with such vigor.
We are going to struggle and I don’t see anyone on the B Team, so God forbid if he gets hurt.
That’s a worry. Above all, we need cover. We need cover in a lot of positions. But that one, the way Clement plays his football, that is a problem if he was to go hurt or leave the club.”
Philippe Clement heavily reliant on Cyriel Dessers at Rangers
Rangers are between a rock and a hard place this late in the window when Dessers is both the only striker option they could realistically sell and also the man they are relying on at the position.
The former Cremonese forward rebounded from a rough start to life in Glasgow to score 22 times last season when all around him were succumbing to injury or poor form, and he has already scored five more this term with no viable alternatives.
For that he deserves credit and for all his faults the current hopes of the side rest on his shoulders, but amid links to the likes of Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland [Daily Record, 2 August] and now-Sparta Prague striker Albion Rrahmani [Football Scotland, 17 June] this summer there had long been an assumption a new number one would arrive.
Spending money on a project like Igamane earlier in the summer has proven to be a gamble, which will need to pay off in the long run.
While Vaclav Cerny has performed well while on loan from Wolfsburg thus far, supporters might have liked to see another center-forward take Sam Lammers’ place.
