Birmingham City set to sign 27-year-old winger

Before the transfer window closes later this week, Birmingham City is expected to sign Rangers winger Scott Wright. Wright is expected to follow Ben Davies, who has already signed a season-long loan with the League One club, out the door. This would mark Chris Davies’ 14th summer signing at St. Andrew’s, as 11 other players have already left the club. The Blues, who were relegated from the Championship the previous season, are the favorites to return to the top division. They have already started the season well, with seven points from their opening three games.

With one year left on his current contract, it is not surprising that Wright has been heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox. In fact, the right-winger was poised to leave the club last summer, but his potential move to Turkish side, Pendikspor, fell through. Rangers had reached an agreement with the European club for a fee of £500,000, but the transfer collapsed at the final stages, meaning the 27-year-old will not be joining the Midlands club for pennies. The addition of Wright could prove to be a shrewd move for the Midlands club and could help them achieve their promotion goal.

Championship side, Preston North End, were also heavily linked with a move for Wright last summer, as per LancsLive. However, the same outlet reported that Rangers turned down two bids for the winger.

Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday had shown earlier interest in Wright this summer, as per David Edgar, but no deal ever materialised.

The DailyRecord are claiming that Rangers would demand £1.5-2 million for the winger, which would represent a sizable fee for a player of his quality with only one year left on his current deal, although money is not thought to be an issue for Birmingham despite their relegation.

Given Wright’s lack of success during his tenure at Rangers, it is not shocking that the 27-year-old was given permission to quit the team. For an undisclosed sum, the right-winger originally joined the Scottish team in 2021 from neighboring SPFL team Aberdeen. Wright agreed to a four-and-a-half-year contract, which expires in the summer of 2019. Wright went on to play 120 games for Rangers, contributing seven assists and 12 goals in his time there. Given these figures, it seems sense that the Scottish powerhouses are prepared to let the winger go.

Wright has not been selected in the match day squad for any of Rangers’ SPFL matches so far this season and was an unused substitute for their Champions League second leg qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv, although he did start the first leg.

A move to League One could be the perfect move for the winger, seeing as Birmingham are challenging for promotion this season. At 27 years of age, Wright is in his prime years as a footballer and must prove himself.

However, Wright would face a battle to get into the Blues’ starting eleven, given the form of Keshi Anderson, who scored against Leyton Orient in their last outing.

Chris Davies has been overhauling his squad this summer and is still looking to make more additions before the transfer window closes later this week. Having already signed Ben Davies from Rangers, the Midlands club are aiming to do more business with the club by bringing in Wright. If Wright were to sign, then it would be a key move for the winger as he must prove himself, with League One the ideal stepping stone in his career.
