On Sunday, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer scored a fantastic goal against Wolves, but video evidence suggests that the goal should have been disallowed.
Sunday’s Premier League games concluded the second week of play after Liverpool defeated Brentford 2-0 at Anfield. Chelsea defeated Wolves 6-2 earlier in the day, securing their first victory of the year thanks to outstanding efforts from Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke.
But it has now been revealed that a little-known rule prevented Palmer’s incredible goal from standing in that game.
Palmer’s third goal of the game—and possibly the greatest of the game—came from a mistake made by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa, who was lobbing Palmer just before halftime as he had come off of his line.
Palmer’s goal should have been disallowed, though, as beIN SPORTS has demonstrated that the pass from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to attacker Nicolas Jackson was unlawful.
The ball was rolling when the Spaniard kicked it to Jackson, which is against Premier League rules, according to slow motion video that was shown after the game. Host Richard Keys of beIN SPORTS stated: “It’s rolling.” It should, in theory, be forbidden.” Palmer’s goal would not have occurred in this situation since play should have been restarted in accordance with the rules.
Fortunately for the Englishman and his team, though, VAR officials aren’t supposed to look for restarts. As a result, the goal stood since Jackson and Palmer were both onside and the referee failed to see the ball rolling before the kick.

(Photo courtesy of Getty) Fans praised Palmer, who had previously helped Jackson score the game’s first goal, on social media shortly after the goal, suggesting that the season’s winning goal may have already been determined.
He then continued to assist on two more goals in the game, setting up two opportunities for teammate Madueke to score a hat trick in the second half.
The Europa Conference League play-off match between Chelsea and Swiss club Servette, whom they defeated 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the competition, will take place at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
In the Premier League, The Blues will face fellow London club Crystal Palace next time out.
