John Bennett to drive Rabbi Matondo away from Rangers himself amid Ibrox exit rumours

According to Andy Newport, Rangers manager John Bennett could be open to removing Rabbi Matondo from the team himself come summertime. Ahead of the last few days of the transfer window, the 23-year-old is on the cutting block at the Gers after being considered surplus to requirements.

In evaluating the Rangers roster for the Daily Record on August 24, Newport identified Matondo—who has been connected to teams like Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers—as a player the team is eager to get rid of before the deadline of August 30. “I think John Bennett will be willing to drive the Welshman himself to Yorkshire,” he remarked. Matondo is paid a huge salary, although he has never really established himself as a member of the first squad. Although the Gers need quality players all around, if forced to choose, a left winger, a striker, and another center mid are the most urgent needs.

Will Rangers offload Rabbi Matondo?
The Welshman was linked with a move to Leeds United earlier this week [Football Scotland] but after Daniel Farke moved to sign Largie Ramazani, a move to Yorkshire is now seemingly off the cards.

The most likely destination for the winger appears to be Blackburn Rovers; although their offer of a loan move where the Gers would pay the majority of the salary is far from ideal, Philippe Clement must make a decision on the offer with no other interested parties present as the deadline approaches [Daily Record]. Rangers would benefit greatly from a loan deal with a buyout option. Although Matondo’s six goals and four assists from the previous season are far from sufficient for a squad to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership, he is more than capable of performing well in the Championship.

Even at 23, he still has a lot of football left in him. According to everyone, going to the Championship would be best for everybody involved because he needs to be playing regularly for the first team and is still far from becoming the kind of player that Rangers needs him to be. The player must ultimately decide whether to play regular football in the Championship for a team that may contend for the play-off spots this season or to remain on the sidelines for a fan base that may grow bitter that their team wasn’t strengthened by the transaction.
