Ianis Hagi Rangers transfer battle is on as boss set to take on Romanian rivals

After a second club expressed interest in the out-of-favor Rangers player, Ianis Hagi is expected to be the target of a bidding battle in the last week of the transfer window. Philippe Clement has barred the Romanian international from first team activities. The offensive midfielder is staying fit with the Gers B team following his return from a season-long loan with La Liga’s Alaves. Hagi, who still has two years left on his Ibrox deal, didn’t play for the team in a competitive match until August 2023, when they played Morton in the Premier Sports Cup.

This week, Rapid Bucharest, a member of Liga 1 who fired manager Neil Lennon on Tuesday after just six games in charge, expressed their intention to return the 39-time Romanian cap winner to his own country. And now Universitatea Craiova, a league opponent that plays Rapid on Saturday, has joined them in their pursuit of the Gers outcast.

At his pre-match press conference, the club’s manager, Costel Garcia, even mentioned Hagi by name, stating, “The University of Craiova would also be interested in a player like Ianis Hagi.” Before adding new players before the August 30 deadline, Gers manager Clement understands he must let go of some players. Another midfielder who may leave before next Friday is Todd Cantwell.

The former Norwich City player has trained away from the first team after submitting a transfer request. Although the Englishman has been linked to a move to the Saudi Arabian team Al-Qadsiah, Rangers has not yet received any offers for his use.
