Ex-Rangers ace in ‘thought he would go’ Tavernier admission

James Tavernier’s departure from the Ibrox team this summer was something that a former Rangers defender acknowledged he well expected. Strong interest in the Scottish Premiership standout has Alan Hutton saying that he ‘genuinely expected he would leave earlier in the window’. With just over a week remaining in the transfer window, Philippe Clement is undoubtedly eager to hang onto his captain in order to bolster rather than deplete his team. Considering the little window of opportunity remaining to do business, Hutton maintains that his former team could not allow the right-back to depart the team for free at this point. “I honestly believed that he would enter the window earlier,” the 39-year-old said “At his age, I thought it might be a wise move, since there were rumors of interest from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.”As the Rangers captain, he’s under continual pressure, but, in my opinion, he’s handled it rather well over the years. He receives all the praise when things go well, but anytime something goes wrong, he always seems to get targeted and it’s a little bit unfair.

“We all know what he’s capable of, so it’s understandable that at the beginning of this new campaign, he has looked a little off the pace. He missed part of preseason.”He will always be a key member of the Rangers team because of the numbers and statistics he provides them with going forward. With only a few weeks remaining in the window, it will be intriguing to watch what happens. If he were to leave, it would need to be for the proper price, and the Rangers would need to sign a successor. The Rangers won’t allow him to leave for nothing or let his contract expire. Therefore, they must either give him a long-term contract or keep him here.
