Cyriel Dessers was ‘close’ to Rangers transfer exit

This summer, Cyriel Dessers was supposedly on the verge of joining Atlanta United before abandoning his plans to leave Rangers. Although the 29-year-old’s performance last season in Scotland in his debut season divided supporters, he scored 22 goals in all competitions. Since the Belgian’s arrival in October of last year, the Nigerian international, who has already scored three goals this season, has been Philippe Clement’s obvious number nine. There were rumors earlier this summer that Dessers may move from the Scottish Premiership to PAOK in Greece, but ultimately, they were unfounded. However, it’s now clear that Dessers turned down a summer transfer to the Major League Soccer. According to Gianluca Di Marzio’s Italian writer Luca Bendoni, a move to Atlanta United was imminent.

It’s said the American side and the Ibrox club held discussions over a potential $6m (£4.6m) deal for Dessers, with a deal at the end of negotiations ‘close’.

That was until the player stepped in and any switch fell flat.

Dessers was signed by Michael Beale last summer for £4.5m.
Marvin Andrews, meanwhile, advised assistant manager Alex Rae to make sure Rangers’ summer additions have a winning mindset in order for them to succeed at Ibrox. When Trinidad and Tobago center half Andrews moved from Livingston, where he had helped win the League Cup, to the Glasgow giants back in 2004, he was instantly struck by the tremendous expectations that would be placed on him. It really only took one training session at Auchenhowie, where manager Alex McLeish chastised him for a badly-placed ball, for him to know he had to step up his game significantly if he wanted to play for the first team.
