Rudderless Rangers ‘devastate’ Ally McCoist as ‘heartbroken’ legend lashes board
With a barely concealed jab at previous CEO James Bisgrove, Ally McCoist maintains that there is a dearth of leadership at Ibrox, stating that the gaps in the stands of their makeshift Hampden home are “not where Rangers should be.” The legendary striker for the Light Blues asserts that the team has a number of pressing problems that require immediate attention. The Rangers are apparently interested in hiring Jim Gillespie, the vice chairman of St. Mirren, to replace Bisgrove, who departed for a lucrative contract in the Saudi Pro League.
In light of Rangers’ current financial predicament, which limits his ability to make transfers and forces him to play away from Ibrox, McCoist acknowledged that he feels sympathy for Philippe Clement. He also said that while the money from the Champions League would have been a huge boost, they wouldn’t have been able to compete on the field against elite opponents on the biggest stage.
McCoist was scheduled to appear on talkSPORT the morning following their qualifying loss to Dynamo Kyiv last week, but he failed to show up. He stated, “It wasn’t because I didn’t want to talk about the game but it was because of other ongoing circumstances which I won’t be telling you! The fact of the matter is Rangers aren’t a Champions League team at this moment in time. That aside, Rangers are short at this moment in time. There’s no way Rangers could handle the Champions League.” McCoist’s breakfast show partner Jeff Stelling continued,
“The problem is that financially they desperately needed the Champions League for financial reasons.”
And McCoist continued: “I’m genuinely devastated at what’s going on at my club. The recruitment, goalkeeper (Jack Butland) and Dujon Sterling aside, has been unbelievably poor. They have given money to people to spend who haven’t spent it wisely at all. We’re not even playing our home games at Ibrox now. I’ve seen it in the last couple of games – there’s big gaps at Hampden. That’s not where Rangers should be.
“On the pitch, we’re miles off it. It breaks my heart to say it. And off the pitch as well we’ve got an unbelievable amount of work to do. There doesn’t seem to be any leadership. The previous chief executive has gone to Saudi Arabia and I’m not sure about the job he did.
“A few million dollars were spent on players here and there, $3 million and $4 million, but such purchases weren’t for me or the Rangers fans. We need to take immediate action to address the issues we are facing. “At this point, it’s quite obvious that Philippe Clement needs to get some out the door before he can get any in, so I genuinely feel bad for him. Unfortunately, the current team isn’t good enough to win the league at this point in time. We are a Conference League/European League squad. That is all there is to it. As perpetual optimists go, winning the Scottish Premiership is usually the greatest we can aspire for, but if Rangers win the league it will be one of their greatest triumphs ever!”
